Bedford County Sheriff’s Office Issues 9-11 Commemorative Badge
Bedford, VA – Bedford County Sheriff Michael J. Brown is pleased to announce another segment in his memorial to the patriotism and sacrifice made by the public safety workers killed on September 11, 2001. The theme “NEVER FORGET” is a continuation of Sheriff Brown’s observance of our Nation’s loss.
To further memorialize the heroes of 9-11, a ceremony was held on September 11, 2003 to unveil a new badge authorized for wear by all Bedford County Deputies. All sworn personnel will wear this badge for the month of September every year. “We must never forget”, states Brown. “This is our way of showing the continuing pride each of us has in the law enforcement profession. Our brothers and sisters were killed and we will never forget.”
This badge features United States Flags flanking the Sheriff’s star and the seal of the Commonwealth topped by an eagle. Across the center is a black mourning band and the bottom panel is inscribed, “NEVER FORGET” around the date, 9-11, in black. The badge is a unique custom-made design created by a staff member.
The idea came of age during a 9-11 memorial ceremony at the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, on February 11, 2002. The somber ceremony attracted public safety officials from across the United States to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that tragic day. Bedford County Sheriff’s cruisers have since displayed the names of officers who lost their lives on 9-11 in a prominent position on the outside of each patrol vehicle. Additional names were issued and displayed for the month of September 2003.
