Press Release

Meet the Animal Control Deputies at BCSO

Sheriff Mike Brown is pleased to officially welcome the newest members to the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office – The Bedford County Sheriff’s Animal Control Division.

It was the decision of the Bedford Board of Supervisors that this division should indeed be part of the Sheriff’s office, utilizing specially trained deputies in the enforcement of all VA law pertaining to animals; domestic and livestock.

After successful completion of the Virginia State Animal Control Enforcement training, these certified deputies are now qualified to respond to all animal-related complaints throughout Bedford County. Issues of animal cruelty, neglect, animal bites/attacks, and livestock at large and any emergency situation involving pets are now swiftly answered by the Animal Control team. Other duties also include enforcement of rabies control for all domestic pets in Bedford County, as well as proper licensing through the Bedford County Treasurer’s Office.

Sheriff Brown expressed his complete confidence in Major Gardner’s abilities and his continued dedication to law enforcement. “I am so pleased that The Board showed their complete support by collectively approving this well-deserved promotion” Brown said.

Please join Sheriff Brown in welcoming Deputies Daniel Harmony, Adam Hopkins, Jennie Smith, Tommy Witt to the BCSO family, who are under the auspices of Lt. Darryl Saunders.

To report animal cruelty, neglect, or any animal-related issue, please contact the Bedford County 9-1-1 Dispatch center at 540-586-7827, in case of emergency, dial 9-1-1.
