BCSO Completes Important Training
On Monday, December 17th, 2007, Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown announced that his
department has completed two important training requirements. During the
week of November 26-30th, the Department's road deputies completed their
annual Defensive Driving Course. At the same time, on November 28-30th,
Emergency Operations Center Training, part of the NIMS (National
Incident Management Systems) Federally mandated training, was completed.
According to Lt. Darryl Saunders, Field Operations
Lieutenant, 45 deputies spent eight hours each day in COV (Code of
Virginia) legal training, along with behind the wheel training, as
pictured. The purpose of the "behind-the-wheel" training was to sharpen
the driving skills of all the road deputies, especially improving their
skills in handling their cruisers in extremely hazardous situations, as
well as during normal driving.
Joining the training were personnel and units from
Campbell County, which also provided an instructor, who joined Sgt.
David Marsh, Cpl. David Couglan and Deputy Brian Neal, BCSO's three
certified instructors.
The Emergency Operations Center (EOS) training, which
included different levels of training, depending on one's position in
the Department, included Sheriff Brown, who described the training as "a
critical component of both intra and inter-agency management of any type
of major incidents."
The NIMS training is overseen by the National
Integration Center (NIC) Incident Management Systems Division, which was
established by the Secretary of Homeland Security to provide "strategic
direction for oversight of NIMS."
Sheriff Brown said, "Both of these training sessions
are important and our personnel responded enthusiastically and
contributed like the professionals they are. We are 'sharper' for the
experiences."
