January is National Stalking Awareness Month

BEDFORD, VA - Sheriff Mike Brown is inviting the attention of all Bedford County citizens, to the fact that January is National Stalking Awareness Month. Brown said, "This is the fifth year the U.S. Senate has seen fit to resolve, and applaud the efforts of law enforcement agencies, and other organizations which promote stalking awareness."

Continuing, Brown said, "Stalking is a crime which causes victims to be fearful 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is a crime in Virginia with severe penalties, upon conviction."

Citizens are encouraged, if they think they are being stalked, or harassed, to contact the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, at 540.586.4800 to file a complaint. The following links, furnished by the Stalking Resource Center - an arm of the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC) - show the Senate resolution, and identify the Commonwealth of Virginia's (COV) Stalking and Harassment laws and penalties.
