24 Horses Rescued, Animal Cruelty Charges Pending

Vinton, Bedford County, VA- On Monday, May 4th approximately 7:30 am, Bedford County Sheriff's Animal Control Deputies executed a search warrant at 304 Stewart Street, Vinton. The search warrant was the result of an on going investigation involving animal cruelty by deprivation of horses by Gary Chisom, the owner of the horses.

Chisom, age 51, was arrested on March 30, 2009 by Bedford County Animal Control deputy and charged with animal cruelty; deprivation. That charge is pending in Bedford County General District Court.

Deputies and volunteers worked late into the night loading the horses on to trailers. But once darkness fell they were unable to safely maneuver the horses around the abundant debris, such as old farm equipment, fallen trees and the deep mud. The returned for a second day to complete the rescue.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the United States Equine Rescue League and Animal Control deputies, these horses are now being properly fed and safely boarded by the Rescue League volunteers. The state veterinarian, took blood samples from all the animals for testing and treatment if necessary.

There will be a hearing in 10 days at which time the judge will determine whether or not to return the horses to the owner. Or, turn them over to the county.

Further charges against Gary Chisom are pending review by the Bedford County Commonwealth Attorney's Office.
